The pick

Pick the original, used, if the budget reaches about $3,500. It keeps IWC service, a 37 mm case that matches the catalog, and resale value. Pick the fake Portofino 33 only if you want a 33 mm dress watch under $600 and you accept a Miyota or clone movement, no factory pressure test, and no brand service. The rest of this page covers what separates the two on a bench, then the buying options.

What "Portofino 33" refers to

IWC has no Portofino model named 33. The Portofino line runs from 34 mm to 45 mm across the automatic, chronograph and hand-wound references. "Portofino 33" is a seller label. Calipers on those cases read about 33 mm across the bezel, so the number describes the replica case, not an IWC reference. The closest IWC watch is the Portofino Automatic 37, ref. IW4586.

fake portofino 33 vs original

Case

Original: 37 mm across, about 9.4 mm thick, 316L steel, polished bezel and case band, closed caseback. The edge between bezel and band is a crisp line, and the lugs taper in one plane. Fake: about 33 mm across, about 8.5 mm thick. The bezel edge reads soft under a loupe and the lug tops show a step from the polishing wheel. Weight: the original sits heavier in the hand because of the movement holder and the solid back.

Dial and hands

Original: applied indices with faceted tops, a fine printed minute track, serif logo print, date at 3. The leaf hands carry a bevel down the center. Fake: indices sit on small pads, and glue shows at a corner on most samples. Print is thicker. The date font runs about 0.2 mm wider. The hands are flat stampings with no bevel, so they catch light in one flat band instead of two.

Fake Portofino 33: How to Find the Best Replica

Movement

Original: IWC calibre 35111, Sellita SW300-1 base, 25 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 42 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds, quick-set date. Fake: Miyota 9015 or a Chinese copy of the ETA 2892. The Miyota winds with a lighter feel and the rotor is louder on the wrist. Rate spread: owner reports put the fake at 15 to 30 seconds per day between positions. IWC does not publish a COSC certificate for calibre 35111, so the original is regulated, not certified.

Water resistance

The original is rated 3 bar. Under ISO 22810 that means splash and rain, not swimming. Gaskets sit at the crown, caseback and crystal. Fakes often ship with no pressure test. The crown seal is the first leak point on most samples.

Strap and clasp

Original: Santoni alligator on a steel pin buckle, hand-finished edges, tight stitch spacing. Fake: embossed calf on a stamped buckle. Stitch spacing is wider and the edge paint is a single coat. The buckle tang on the fake is thinner by about 0.3 mm at the tip.

Price and service

Original new: about $5,000 to $6,500. Used: about $2,800 to $4,000. IWC service: $400 to $700 with a 3 to 6 month turnaround. Fake: $250 to $600. Service on a fake is a movement swap, $80 to $150, at a local watchmaker.

Options

  1. Original, used, 2018 or later, box and papers: about $3,500. Full IWC service, best resale.
  2. Original, new: about $5,500. Same watch, higher entry cost.
  3. Fake, $450 to $600 tier: Miyota 9015, sapphire crystal, 316L case. Best chance of a stable rate.
  4. Fake, $250 to $350 tier: clone movement, coated glass on some batches, no pressure test.

Checks before you pay

  • Case size with calipers. Anything under 35 mm is not an IWC Portofino Automatic 37.
  • Rate on a timegrapher in three positions.
  • Crown seal and caseback gasket, then a 3 bar pressure test.
  • Print quality at 10x. Thick print and a wide date font are the two fastest tells.
  • Buckle tang thickness and stitch spacing on the strap.

Note: watches that carry IWC trademarks without IWC authorization are not IWC products, and US customs can seize them at import.
